I wrote this poem after our visit to Aberdeenshire Scotland where I stood before, and sat on, these 4000 year old standing stones. The stones are actually in a large circle but I could not get it all in the photo. We were indeed joined by a family of five and played hide and seek amongst these stones.
We walked the path to the treeless hill
and leaned our packs against the stones.
As so many had done before we gazed
and felt the ground give up its bones.
Around us rose the circular stand
tall wisdom robed in rocky ground.
We quickly wandered from reason’s road
as we listened to the wind blown sound.
Out of death came life, the air had changed
as if filtered through some ancient lands
Where people met and carried the stone
to mark where body and soul held hands.
We stayed and we played hide and seek
when a family of five came along
and hid behind the rockiest face
while the standing stones sang songs.
